KaBOOM! kicked off 2012 by building its 2,074th playground, and by year’s end was cutting the ribbon on playground number 2,241, for a total of 167 great new places to play. KaBOOM! also awarded $2.9 million in grants which resulted in the building or improvement of 624 additional playgrounds.
1,643,505 children now have a great place to play.
52,317 dedicated volunteers shoveled mulch, mixed concrete and assembled playground equipment to help bring play to the kids in their communities who need it most.
From Connecticut to California, KaBOOM! staff traveled across the country (and even a little further!) bringing play where it was needed most. New playgrounds were built in 48 states as well as DC, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Canada and Mexico.
Sponsored by the Humana Foundation, Playful City USA recognizes and honors cities and towns advocating for local policies that increase play opportunities for children. 2012 was the program's most successful year to date, with 213 participating communities, hailing from 41 states across the country.
